Milano Wellness City 2030: Building the Future of Health Today

22 giugno 2025

An interview with Nerio Alessandri, founder of Technogym and creator of the Milano Wellness City project.

Seen from the outside, Milan is a city on the move: a dynamic metropolis, the economic capital of Italy, a crossroads of trends, ambition, and innovation. But if you look beneath the surface, beyond the numbers, you’ll sense something deeper: a growing awareness that real health begins long before any diagnosis. It starts with lifestyle, with shared culture, with a city that knows how to care for its citizens.

That’s where Milano Wellness City 2030 comes in, a project launched by the Wellness Foundation to make Milan an international model for prevention and well-being, fully aligned with the global goals of the UN’s 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

Leading this vision is Nerio Alessandri, entrepreneur and innovator, founder of Technogym, and long-time believer that “wellness pays off.” After pioneering the Wellness Valley in Romagna, Alessandri chose Milan to take the concept of wellness to a new urban scale.

«Milan has everything it takes to meet major challenges: as the economic and financial capital of Italy, a city that has always been visionary and forward-thinking, it’s the ideal place to promote a social and cultural model that puts health first, focusing on prevention and creating the right conditions to support healthy life choices»

A fertile ground, certainly, but also a demanding challenge. Because while Milan is one of the most advanced Italian cities in terms of quality of life and public policy (from its Food Policy to its leadership in the WHO Healthy Cities Network), it also shows warning signs that cannot be ignored.

“I’ve been positively impressed by the city’s commitment to improving quality of life and well-being. However, an aging population and widespread unhealthy habits, along with rising obesity and chronic diseases, are driving up healthcare costs to unsustainable levels and negatively affecting quality of life. What worries me most is the situation among the younger generations”.

Milano Wellness City 2030 was created in response to this urgency. But not with slogans or top-down programs. The goal is to build a true urban wellness ecosystem, integrating lifestyle medicine, nutrition, mental well-being, research, education, tourism, and revitalized public spaces. A network of tangible actions, with a cultural mission as much as a health one.

“Above all, this is a cultural project. Only by joining forces, integrating existing initiatives, and launching new ones, can we truly spread a culture grounded in healthy lifestyles and prevention”.

That culture, however, must also speak the language of economics. Alessandri knows it well: wellness is not just a social value, it’s a growth engine.

«I would sum it up in three words: ‘Wellness pays off.’ For everyone. Despite global uncertainty, the Wellness Economy is showing significant growth, with forecasts projecting a 52% increase by 2027, reaching $8.5 trillion globally».

That’s why the project immediately brought together institutions, companies, universities, and nonprofit organizations. A true citywide “steering group,” built to unite efforts around a shared goal.

“This project could only come to life through the collaboration of high-level partners—bringing together expertise and experience and tapping into the many local strengths tied to quality of life.”

The expected benefits are far-reaching: from physical activity programs to wellness education, from conscious nutrition to corporate wellness, from urban regeneration to mental well-being initiatives.

«In short, we want to make it easy for people to make healthy choices. That means training, knowledge, skills, well-equipped public spaces, and new opportunities—for both young people and older adults—to engage in physical activity, enjoy wellness-oriented menus, and embrace healthier lifestyles».

The first major milestone? The Milan-Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics and Paralympics, a unique opportunity to unite sport, health, and urban vision in a lasting legacy. But the broader horizon is 2030.

“The ability to predict disease before it appears will be the greatest revolution of our time.
Healthness builds on Wellness and takes this vision further—making prevention tangible through the power of data and artificial intelligence.”

Milan, then, is just the beginning. A living laboratory ready to lead the way. The ultimate dream? For the ripple effect of urban well-being to reach everywhere and leave a mark.

“My hope is that this project will trigger a positive chain reaction—both nationally and internationally”.
